My 97 civic wont start at first i thought that it was that the batterys dead but someone else is saying otherwise. All the lights turn on and i can hear the starter going but nothings happening.

    A few things could be responsible. Does your dash have any lights on that might indicate a problem? It could be that your fuel pump has broken, not supplying fuel to the engine. It could be that your timing belt has snapped. This is the belt between the crankshaft and camshaft and keeps the valves and pistons in sync. If that has snapped, then you won’t have any compression in your cylinders to start the engine. The crankshaft will be rotating, but the camshaft will not, leading to some valves being open when they should be closed, and some being closed when they should be open. Your car might sound like it’s not giving the typical studder/chugging like normal when you turn the key. If that’s the case, then anytime you try and start the engine, your cylinders will be colliding with valves that are not moving and could be damaging your engine. I learned my lesson the hard way an about a year and half ago when my timing belt snapped. My parents weren’t really car savvy and I was never advised to replace my timing belt after 90,000 miles. If you’ve never replaced yours, and you’ve driven it ~90,000-100,000 miles since buying from the previous owner/buying the car, then that could be it.
