Hello guys,

the wifi at my parents house sucks and I’m tired of:
Mum: “Son why is the wifi not working?”
Me: “What AP are you connected to?”
Mum: *confused*
so I want to upgrade it, but I’m not sure what to buy yet.

Situation:

  • 2 Story house(brick walls) roughly rectangle shaped with basement and large Garden
  • rougly 170 m^2 Living Area and 800 m^2 Garden
  • ISP Router in top story with wires going to: 2* same floor, ground floor and basement
  • we have two old TP-Link Routers/Aps which are 100Mbit/s and don’t have firmware for an AP Mode (I hate these fuckers)
  • bad wifi coverage in kitchen, living room and literally no wifi outside

could do / need:

  • I need LAN for PCs, Printers etc at all the named positions too (can’t use the one connection for an AP only)
  • Wifi should be broadcasted as one SSID
  • I could probably host a controller on TrueNas Scale or on a Ubuntu VM if needed
  • would be cool if I could redirect dns requets to my pihole (but thats pretty standard right?)
  • obviously 1 Gbit/s Hardware
  • as cheap as possible but as expensive as needed

would appreciate any help

Exactly the same issue i had last year. Installed 2 ruckus r650 unleashed (mesh) and haven’t had a downtime since then (except power outage).

Their connection is pretty slow right now (20/5) but they’re getting fiber in the next 1-2 years with 100-300 down. (Haven’t chosen yet)

    1. Target what’s there today with room for growth. For two people with low expectations, 20/5 is reasonable. Browsing the Internet and streaming video doesn’t require much if it’s consistent with good latency.

    2. Use an 802.11AX router with OpenWrt and SQM.

    3. Add ethernet runs and an OpenWrt supported Access Point as needed.

    4. Set up remote access to manage or visit your parents :)

    5. Profit.
