Can confirm. I use Koch Chemie Magic Wheel Cleaner to get rid of break dust and my lug nuts have started to look rusty. I’d imagine after years of use, they will look like this.
I just try my best not to hit them directly with the spray
The acid doesn’t affect the painted surfaces as easily as it does the lug nuts.
Given enough times, the paint on the wheel and rotor will start to erode.
Agreed! I just replied a rant to a similar comment above! Crazy how bad some of these products/chemicals are!
Major vendor tried getting us to switch brake cleaner and it was literally melting the seals in the Wurth brake clean bottles! We used it for literally 1 hour and made all techs dump it out and had vendor take it back! I swear it had to a mislabeled drum not just the new/different formula to eat through seals look that and melted the nitrile and latex gloved off your hand in minutes if you got it on you!
This is 100% the result of a VERY aggressive acid-based wheel cleaner used improperly.
I’ve seen it numerous times, and had to go after my detail department on a few occasions because they cost us new lug bolts.
Just take them off, hit them with some Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer, then spray paint them whatever color you want.
In addition, make sure you torque BY HAND - if you UGGA DUGGA them, they’re gonna chip off again.

This needs to be the top comment.
