Looks like I had green coolant in there but my local auto store only had:
Prestone® MAX European Vehicles (Blue) Antifreeze + Coolant
Am I screwed? Should I drain it ASAP?
Edit: the large tank was basically empty so I doubt any mixed yet but there was still some in the smaller tank
Color is not a reliable characteristic for determining coolant. Call the dealer and ask. My car uses G48. That means G48. Not red, blue, green, yellow. G48.
Discounting the incorrect colour for a minute, what caused the coolant loss in the first place?
No worries Green and blue are relatively compatible. You’d be in trouble if you had put any other color in besides green/blue. You can drive to a shop to get it drained and swapped with no issues.
Color doesn’t indicate coolant type. The blue OP used might not necessarily be a G48 equivalent. OP should figure out first if it’s a G48 equivalent.
I don’t know what your X3 calls for, but you could just drain it and flush with distilled water before putting the correct stuff in it.
Actually BMW OEM coolant is blue color (at least it used to be)
Huh, you learn something new everyday. I had no idea BMW switched to green coolant.
Anyways, I found this on Tischer’s product page for the green stuff. If you can make out the German symbology, have at it. It looks like if you got “G48” and mixed it with the “HT12”, that’s ok. No clue if G48 is like a standard (e.g. LL01 for oil), or if it’s a BMW-specific term/number.
Why don’t you just call your local BMW service department?
