Avoiding rodents in winter

Hello! I live in NYC and I’m looking for tactics to keep mice and rats out of my hood during the winter time. They got in and nested in May and it cost a pretty penny to fix so I’m open to all suggestions. Thank you in advance!!

We just leave our hood open. They like closed spaces. But I live in the middle of nowhere so nobody is going to steal my battery
