Oh lovely. Build an unproven technology car in a country known for cost cutting low paying jobs.
Wish they still made E-Golfs.
idunno, 125mi driving range is a really tough sell IMO unless it’s like… way cheaper than a normal car.
Ford and GM are making their some EVs in Mexico, aren’t them ?
Mexican labors are cheap, and NAFTA means no tariffs to come North America. That’s reason why automakers rather to make their EVs in Mexico.
Will they have shitty buttonless interiors and software to spy on me because “futuristic”?
Audi makes all Q5’s in Mexico so not surprised.
VW and Audi have separate factories.
And just like the MK7 factory in Mexico it produced the lowest quality version of that car. The difference in fit and finish between my Mexican made MK7 GTI and German made R were night and day. Mexican made Q5 have some QC issues and so do the engines (EA211 for the Jetta) made in Mexico.
Ran into the same kind of issues when I was a service advisor working for Mazda. When they started building the 3 sedan there, quality started dropping on those cars, and Mazda even had service bulletins specific to MX built cars. This is also true of when I was younger and worked at a Honda dealer when second gen Fits were released, since they started to be produced there for North America - much poorer QC. To this day, I’ll never recommend someone to buy an MX built car if there is the option to purchase the same vehicle built elsewhere.
VWs factory in Puebla is massive
This is in addition to their fully maxed out EV plant that they are constantly expanding in Chattanooga, TN and the Scout plant that will be going in in Columbia, SC.
That interior looks like a 90s Sea-Doo
Because EVs need that $7,500 federal credit to be competitive. In order to get that credit, the car needs to be built in North America. That makes Mexico the obvious choice.
I really hope this generation of ID products fail miserably and VW has to rethink the cost cutting, awful to use interfaces and bland design.
Meh, historically, VW has had relatively “bland” designs. However, the styling tends to age well, although the rest of the vehicle tends not to age as well. LoL.
Mexico is the sole reason the Volkswagen Ehbeatle bug exists. Mexico will be the sole reason the eh-ev ehbeattle bug exist.
Mexico has all the og beetles laying around. I wonder how hard it would be to electrify those.
With the covid supply chain issues and the updated trade agrement that allows for goods to be made anywhere in North America not just a certain distance from the US border I suspect a lot of companies are going to ramp up their production in Mexico.
That’s scary!
My Jetta was manufactured in Mexico! No surprises to me that they’d start producing EV’s there too!
