I was driving to work the other day, engine started smoking up bad, had to get the car towed.
Turns out the I cracked cylinder head on my cx5, and even better it’s a known issue, a design flaw and one they have corrected. Yet the people with this problem are left to fit the bill. I have it sitting in the shop with a quote of almost 7 grand to fix.
I can’t afford this fix and I don’t know what to do, I wish I could just total the car at this point.
I love my car, she has been a great car and I have kept up on the services and everything, but now I’m left to deal with their flaw.
I’m out of warranty of course and I’m going to argue with the dealership and Mazda because this is utterly unacceptable and should have been a recall!
And plenty of other people had to deal with it too, thankfully nobody has been left stranded somewhere because of it.
The option is simple though. You either pony up 7 k for this repair or 7 k for a downpayment on another one. Reach out to Mazda corporate, you’re not that far out of warranty and if your VIN falls within the known problem cars they might help you with some of the cost.
If you’re upset about this engine don’t get a Kia Or a Hyundai. ever.
With current interest rates, they might be better off keeping and repairing the car. 7K down on another 30-40k car is still an expensive payment, especially with negative equity.
American made older Hyundais you mean? They had a recall though, not Mazda.
Any Hyundais
Or just pay $1k for a used engine another $1k for an independent shop to install it?
Unless I see a receipt with those prices I don’t buy that anyone will do it for that cheap. Don’t know where OP is either because in a high cost of living area I don’t think that price is unheard of.
You’re right that it’s a bit low, but I know Euro shops can do an engine swap on a turbo BMW for around $2k. Can’t imagine an NA Mazda would be any more than that, probably less.
Hyundai famous shitty engine has a lifetime warranty.
I too will never buy a Mazda as my Mazda speed 3 engine took a shit at 65k miles with a common issue of low compression in cylinder 3.
Hyundai and Kia shit engine Does not have a lifetime warranty in most places. It’s 10 y/100 k miles by default, and if you buy it used it’s 5 y/60 k miles passed down to the second owner, not the original warranty! Their dealership service departments also backed up for months if you need to have your engine replaced AND they do not cover a rental. So good luck making insurance payments, potentially car payments if the failure hits early enough, and paying for a rental and contacting corporate attempting to get rental reimbursement. If you actually need a car daily it’s not one of the Korean ones.
Also if you want a statistically more reliable engine don’t buy a turbo. 🤷♀️ for me it’s a given any turbo will come with oil burning and potentially other issues. Tons of high mileage Mazdas chugging along without a turbo. Several over 300 k miles 2016 CX-5s. I have 60 k miles on my 2021. No issues for now but my actual reliability checkpoint is at 120 k miles. If I’ve done nothing but oil, brake, tires and spark plugs before 120 k, I’ll buy another.
They replaced Theta II engines with 150k+ plus miles on them for free. I’ve heard good and bad things about Hyundai, but they tried to make up for that mistake.
There’s 2.4 and 2.0 theta engines. They fucked everyone with the 2.0 L engine that sold more units which is not included in any recalls
I didn’t know about the Theta I. I assume it was a shitty engine, not a flawed one with metal shavings like Theta II.
You are talking non-sense. My father had the theta 2 replaced under warranty. Rental covered for 3 months. No issues at all with the process and they were easy to work with. Stop spreading fud.
Turbo cars can be as reliable. I have a Hyundai with 60k miles not a single problem.
My Mazda was literally the worst experience. Engine mount broke, later was recalled. Constant suspension issues. Rust. Absolute piece of shit.
Their reliability appears to be better now but I’ve been burned.
If you bought the MS3 new, I feel sorry for you. If you bought it used on the other hand, you shoulda done research.
