In the last 5 years I haven’t had one it is very sad
Personally we didnt, we dont put decorations up. But the estate we live on goes all out so we get all the kids from here plus people driving in from other places. It was packed, hundreds of kids everywhere.
We had loads last year, like… 40 or 50, and this year we had 2. I think there was a big soccer match on so boys and dads wanted to watch that instead
Meanwhile, 1 mile away, every street had a constant stream of kids and teens dressed up.
We went out trick or treating with our minion. It was a lot quieter than it has been.
It’s worth noting, all the kids in our area know to only ring at houses with Halloween decorations up. They all skip houses without. Some friends, who moved from the states, were disappointed the first year, when they didn’t get any trick or treaters at all. They put decorations up the next year!
Some towns really don’t seem to participate, glad to be somewhere it’s catching on. Dorset in general seems more easygoing with it.
I was talking to another parent last night about what it was like 30 years ago in America, there were so fewer norms around it. Roving gangs of unmonitored sugar-frenzied kids in costume knocking on every door they could find for miles around, late into the night. Some of them would actually retaliate against houses not participating, eggs and toilet papering weren’t a rare sight. It was a hell of a thing, but I’m glad the kids growing up now are polite and go home before 11pm. And there are norms around not knocking on houses unless they’re decorated. The kids are very civil and tame these days, compared to what I grew up with. Not complaining!
No, but it’s not really a thing in Japan and especially not here in the deep countryside. When I loved in Tokyo, I think one or two foreigner-heavy neighborhoods we’re trying to get something going

Fair enough, it counts 😝
Plus polite and emotionally reserved.
In the Victorian Era, Japan was called “the Britain of the East”.
None this year. 2-3 last year. None the year before. My wife just dumped the candy in the bin.
Do you live off the beaten track? Or just not popular in your area?
Scotland. It’s just not much of a thing here.
I track how much candy we give out each year so I know how much to buy and it’s been a steady decline.
We had five door bell rings with one group showing up while I was still at the door, so call it six groups. We gave away 48 pieces of candy, including the first kid who grabbed about 8 pieces. (I let them reach in and take as much as they want and since it was raining I figured it would be a blow out. Otherwise I think three or four is enough). The first year we tracked it maybe twenty years ago, it was about 140 pieces.
Personally I had about five pieces plus a root beer shake with a little Kalua in it. I friggin LOVE Halloween and the whole month of October for that matter.
You’ll get more if you sit out on the porch with the candy. Just put a comfy sweater on and enjoy the fresh air for one evening, I don’t get why people hide inside away from the trick or treaters 🤷🏼♂️
There are tons of kids in my neighborhood, but it is lower income area so a lot of parents take their kids to the richer neighborhoods assuming that they’ll get better candy I guess. Jokes on them I always give out full size candies, and once it starts getting dark (it starts earlier here) I tell kids to take as much as they want
I go fucking hog wild for Halloween. Tons of decorations outside, inflatable giant 20ft cat, colored lights that project on the house, drag a stereo outside and blast Halloween music, rolled the grill out and made chili dogs for people, had the firepit out also. I carve my punkins in the driveway with a sawzall for fun, they turn out surprianly good, can do a decant job in about 5 min each.
Our neighborhood isnt packed, but we usually dump about 8 lbs of candy. I don’t do full size, but I give big handfuls. The last teenagers through get everything that wasn’t taken.
I fucking love Halloween. Going to check out discount decorations for next year.
Lots, we ran out of sweets by 18:30. First visitors were a witch and a pumpkin. The highlight was a group dressed as Dr Gregory House, Dr James Wilson and a Hospital.
Sad to see it’s not so common elsewhere.
We had around 7 or 8 groups call at the door so around 25 kids total. It was a slightly below average year.
We’ve had both very quiet and very busy years. One year we had to dip into our own kids stash and replace it (which they were cool with thankfully).
Blimey that’s a lot
It felt quiet believe it or not. There was a 45 minute gap at one point.
I’m positively green!
None but we didn’t put up decorations outside. My partner is a teacher and the school do a route for kids with who ever wants to participate and she doesn’t really want them to know exactly where we live.
3 all together :(
Yeah we had loads! Lots of houses put on impressive displays by us and there were several hundred people out. We’re lucky that we live in an area where it attracts lots of young families so that helps.
We got 1 and gave them sugar free chocolate (sorry kiddo).
Houses sucked ass this year. Like, 1 in 10 decorated and at least half were closed.
First year in 30 years I had the thought to go back out after dropping off the kid and tossing an “egg” though a few windows with the note “do fucking better” attached.
US though.
Noone should be forced to join in if they don’t want to. This seems very selfish to me.
No, fuck you. If you can’t even put a bucket of candy out for kids for 2 hours once a year, you’re a lazy ass who doesn’t give a fuck about the children in your community.
nobody gives a fuck about anyone but themselves.
Go back to Reddit you angry american gimp.
Unnecessary anger there. And this is a UK thread, we don’t have the same history or relationship with Halloween as the US. And most people want to be left alone in the evenings, or have pets or young children who don’t want to be scared or stressed.
You demanding that everyone plays your silly games is childish and selfish.
For those who want to opt in, by all means enjoy yourselves, but don’t inflict it on others.
Some people (notably Jehovah’s Witnesses) do have objections to participating in various holidays including Halloween due to some form of moral conviction.
