Washington (United States) (AFP) – President Donald Trump on Friday said he ordered a Justice Department lawsuit seeking to prevent certification of Alaska’s Senate election result if the Republican incumbent loses – ramping up questions over whether he will accept midterms defeat.

“I’m the one that said, ‘Do it,’” Trump announced during a trip to Florida, where he is due to cast his own early ballot for the November 3 election to decide control of Congress – currently in Republican hands.

The extraordinary intervention by a president to launch a preemptive challenge against a possible election result casts a new shadow over the midterms.

Trump – who tried to overthrow the 2020 presidential election after he lost to Democrat Joe Biden – has repeatedly questioned the validity of the upcoming election in which Democrats are forecasted to make big gains.

If Democrats win the House of Representatives, as widely expected, they would be able to exert the first real brake on Trump’s unprecedented exercise of power since he secured his second term two years ago.

Democrats also have an outside chance of winning the Senate if they can flip a handful of Republican-held seats, including in Alaska, where incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan faces Democrat Mary Peltola.

She called the lawsuit “corruption” in a post on X.

    Questions?

They, meaning Trump, the right, the Republicans, the Heritage Foundation, have said multiple times they will now let go of the power they currently wield.

“…revolution will be bloodless if the left allows it to be.”

You know things are going well when you have to threaten to overturn elections in Alaska. I’m also sure that Alaskans, well known for their obedience, will take this cue to vote for the right guy.

Another article I read discussed that the case is basically arguing preemptively that voters for DJSjr may have actually intended to vote for the incumbent DSS. Alaska’s supreme court already weighed in and said DJSjr would not have the ‘Republican’ label on the ballot to minimize confusion.

So, if the Democrat wins, they’d have to make the case that they can somehow discern voter intent. Reminds me of the Florida debacle in 2000 with dimpled chads and hanging chads and arguing intent from errant marks on ballots. In that case US supreme court ultimately ordered all recounting to cease and declared GWB president. Buckle up for the same outcome here. Question is, would they get away with it again?
