Okay, but 100 mph is crazy fast…

But we also wouldn’t want it to be much lower since passing on 2-lane roads is generally safer at faster speeds, so putting a, say, 120 km/h speed limit on cars might be less safe than no limits.

“Crazy fast” is contextual to be honest. Going 100 mph in a school zone is crazy fast. Going 100 mph on the unlimited sections of the German autobahn is pretty tame.

This is also been the traditional challenge with speed limiters - You can’t set a single universal “safe” speed. That said, with GPS and traffic sign recognition, we can now use dynamic limiters to adjust to match the speed limit imposed where the vehicle is currently driving.

Having been on the autobahn in a shitbox Renault econobox rental, 100mph is plenty fast. In North America (especially the rust belt) with how shitty the vehicle safety inspection standards are, I honestly don’t trust the people around me to have maintained their car to an adequate standard to be safe driving at 100mph. Don’t even get me started on how shitty people’s driving skills tend to be.

A car is already a lethal projectile at 60mph. I don’t like the idea of increasing the lethality potential for the average highway driving mistake.

In theory. In practice the car picks up signs from the slip road or GPS location for the parallel local road or doesn’t know what the “in caso di nebbia” text under the 50km/h sign on the motorway means.
