I don’t think anyone from laissez-faire capitalists to vanguard party communists can solve our water issues quickly, at the end of the day catastrophic underinvestment from both the state and the private sector have brought a battery farm’s worth of chickens home to roost. Nobody can fix that without a decades-long effort and an enormous slice of humble pie.
The whole reason it was privatised to begin with was a way to shift future liabilities off the government’s books, like our student loan system it’s all about picking the future’s pocket for today using questionable accounting in my view. Well now we live in the future, and everything is buggered.
There’s plenty he can do. For starters, there are lots of issues with the UK’s privatised water infrastructure. This could either be brought back into public ownership, or the government could put more pressure on these companies to maintain the infrastructure to address all the leaks. Also the last major dam built in the UK was back in 1975, so the government could invest in new dam projects.
I thought I’d seen somewhere that was being looked in to as countries will now need to start looking after their resources. It is however not something that can be done overnight.
They’ve done the same with British Steel because we’re going to need to make our own armour/steel plate. And the railways are being nationalised again. So he/they will get around to it.
Unfortunately ‘building dams/reservoirs’ is often the line spouted as being the fix (along with all the leaks) but a recent New Scientist article -

You can also look up the aquifer data which is very low right across the country. In order to get back to healthy levels we will need a significant amount of sustained rainfall.
But for many when it does rain hard it will be flash flooding because the ground is so dry it will be incapable of soaking water up quick enough.
That’s beside the point. Those are existential problems for the country and it’s his fucking job to do something about it. Obviously there are no short term fixes but that just makes it more important to at least get started.
