Perhaps an interesting concept to explore would be something like “metacommunities” - that is, an extra layer that an instance OR user could apply to gather similar / identical communities spread across instances into a single alias. Perhaps including automated deduplication of posts that are identical, or nearly identical (by edit-distance - we don’t need an LLM for this), apart from the instance it was posted on.
This way, the federation aspect is unaltered, but an additional layer of consolidation/visibility is introduced.
