Where I’m from you still have to go through someone who makes sure all of the shit in your cart is in your receipt, it adds like 30-60 seconds and it’s a single employee for six checkouts.
I know Costco and Walmart do that. The majority of normal grocery stores around me do not. That’s one reason I rarely go to Costco or Walmart. With Costco they have cashiers as well, so it seems like they don’t need to have the 2nd person. It feels like they assume customers are criminals until proven otherwise.
Criminal until proven otherwise for checking that you didn’t miss anything in your cart? That’s extreme, people do make mistakes, if you actually want to steal you can still pocket stuff, the employee likely won’t give two shits since that’s a job for a security guard like it’s always been.
If you’re paranoic about being perceived as a potential criminal that’s fine, you do you, but labeling any sort of basic control as an accusation is not cool, might as well label the presence of a security guard as such.
At Costco they have cashiers and they have your cart and verify it’s empty/everything was scanned. I’m not really sure what the 2nd check is for, other than wasting time.

What second check?
The cashier scans and checks everything at the register. Then the person near the exit goes over the receipt with their highlighter. 2 checks.
My bad, I thought self checkout was when you scan your items yourself
It is, but I’ve never been to a Costco that has that, though I’ve heard recently that some exist.
Receipts are checked regardless of how a person checks out.
I think I found the confusion, you keep talking about Costco when I’m talking about self checkouts, I don’t think that chain even exists in my country
