A national poll from Jacobin, DSA Fund, and Data for Progress finds broad support for democratic socialist leaders and left-wing policies.
I think we’re at the “call it whatever you want” stage.
I’ll call it “social democracy” because that’s what it is. I’m more in favor of abolishing capitalism altogether, though in favor of worker ownership over their workplaces. Bring democracy to the workplace and expand democracy (and make it more direct) in government.
Have we ever not been?
Yes, we used to call it government programs. Public spending. etc.
I’d like this to be the case. But Jacobin as the source is dubious. Personally at least I’m pretty safe saying I’m the only one even in my extended family who’s even heard of them. Or knows what they stand for. I sincerely doubt the average American knows enough for it to be mainstream. At least outside of a few small blue state enclaves.
As much as I like socialism, Jacobin commisioning a survey on the popularity of socialism is like Marlboro commissioning a survey on the popularity of smoking.
Perhaps, but even Fox News polling suggests voters overwhelmingly support progressive policies, as in supermajorities of voters supporting progressive policies. If you call them socialist or communist the numbers go down but when you directly ask the voters about the policies they generally support them on both the right and the left…
“This poll underscores that the term ‘democratic socialism’ now communicates something very practical to American voters: the kind of economic security and fairness once associated with the New Deal tradition,” said Bhaskar Sunkara, president of the Nation magazine and founding editor of Jacobin.
I really hope so.
Now hopefully the Dems will stop running right wing candidates and telling us “you have to vote for the blue conservative or the red conservative will win”, and, instead, support policies that actually help people.
Not holding my breath, though.
Welcome to the rest of the Western world, you fuckers
Please, can Canada cement its place as a fan of democratic socialism? We have some Flatlanders, demented from lack of shoreline, who consistently vote for the lackeys of American oil companies to run the services and manage resources entrusted in them via a policy that resembles a badger driving a school bus.
Don’t congratulate us for finding the parking lot. Maybe wait until we enter the venue first.
Thing is, a few people have a lot of money invested in that not being the case, so… If democratic socialism is in, democracy might just have to go.
As long as we can remove Republicans I really don’t care. If this means left votes get split then I interpret it as bad news, if it means the opposite then that’s great news.
Which is why it is very important that voters never be given the chance to choose it.
Yeahhhhh…I’ll believe that when I see that
it is? almost everything in politics in us, center right,
