The European Mind cannot comprehend how important this is to Americans
Private health insurance is one of the largest scams ever perpetrated on Americans, heavily contributing to one of the worst healthcare systems of any developed nation.
Tying it to employment is just icing on the cake.
Access to affordable healthcare is mostly dependent on decent employment. Many people who are employed, many with more than one job, don’t get health insurance. If you don’t have healthcare, it’s simply not affordable unless you’re quite wealthy. I’ve seen hospital bills that listed aspirin at $250 apiece.
I don’t quiet understand what a work insurance is? Is this !usdefaultism@lemmy.world ?
It’s an incentive US employers offer in lieu of additional pay or employee rights. One that the employee still has to pay for. When nearing middle age, It’s just generally cheaper than going without. It relies on healthy young people, who mostly don’t really need it beyond regular cleanings/check-ups, signing up to help cover the costs of older workers.
It’s the health insurance that is offered by your employer in the United States.
So yes. Its usdefaultism
Sounds more like Canada to me. None of those things are covered publicly here, although we were making some slow progress on drug and dental coverage when we had a mildly progressive party sharing power.
I can’t really complain, it covered a couple of life-changing surgeries for me. I wish it wasn’t so expensive though.
Job only offer vision and dental, seems like it would be decent coverage if I could find a provider that takes both the insurance and new patients.
I can get a collective discount from my work, but it’s not worth the trouble. Its only with one specific insurer and I already get a collective discount with my insurer, because I have all my insurances with the same insurer, which gives more discount than my work would offer with a different insurer.
You…you can choose your insurers?
Never had to deal with workers insurance as I have never been in a workplace accident.
They’re referring to insurance offered as a benefit through their work.
As opposed to individual insurance you have to pay for entirely by yourself, if you’re freelance for instance.
They’re not talking about work-accident insurance, aka worker’s comp.
Workers comp comes out of taxes or something but end of the day, its an option altho i will say plans provided thru private insurance (work-provided insurance) are more flexible and realistic. Its not always going to be super reduceable to one discrete point in time in which you were at work and became acutely debillitated .
Often even when that happens and you dont know better your managers will subltely coach you into shrugging it off and either taking a slightly longer break or some other nominal concession that influences you to completey screw a future successfull claim, to your vastly differential peril and securing their own financial and professional incentive
Neither have i, sometimes things develop over time. Too many people think they have to br maimed + on the job to get what their premiums entitle them to. Usually workplace and general are paid for every paycheck so they should realize they covered either way
Premiums for workers insurance? What backwards country are you from?
The insurance is paid by the company if you get injured and you don’t pay anything.
I realize that but you still pay however small a premium for it, check yo paychecks. The relevant point is its paid for, there’s nothing more to be earned or needing to be sufficiently destroyed before you are possibly or likely eligible to claim
You pay for both workplace accident insurance (like OSHA type shit) and private disabillity insurance (short + long), thru premiums altho the employer obv pays more
I’ve never have been in a workplace accident so absolutely no experience with my work places insurance.
