Bill 10, which holds landlords criminally liable for any drug activity on their properties, became law on June 4th.
Bill 10, put forward by Ontario Premier Doug Ford, passed into law on June 4th. Subtitled the Protect Ontario Through Safer Streets and Stronger Communities Act, it includes a clause that would hold landlords criminally liable for any illicit drug activity on their properties. The Schedule 8 clause targets drug trafficking, but also covers any possession that might indicate an intent to sell, even if it’s just a few pills or a joint.
So if someone shoots up in the stairwell of a police station, are they pressing charges against Bill Blair?
Well this doesn’t sound good for most music venues. It’s not like they weren’t already closing left front and centre due to higher rents.
Personally, I support this bill. Then again I also prefer only selling drugs (both pharmaceutical and recreational) through crown corps only not through private businesses.
If Ford was seriously against drugs he’d limit selling to LCBO and OCS, etc.
I’m pretty close to a prohibitionist. But acknowledge that prohibition is not practical has shown not to yield the expected results.
