In 2008 they’d just use retard. It wasn’t even slightly controversial of a word at that point, just like disabled isn’t really now (since that differently abled nonsense euphemism failed to take off).
I think I remember seeing Hannah Montana in a commercial before then saying not to use the word, but it was still pretty common place in 07, just on it’s way out.
Retard. I thought it was Hannah Montana anyway. One of those where someone says it and she says you shouldn’t say it. I tried looking it up, but didn’t find what I was looking for. I’m probably misremembering either the person or the commercial entirely, so probably also the timeframe.
I laughed at the comic, but I’m pretty sure likening ‘very dumb/bad’ to ‘disability’ is pretty controversial, even if the word disabled isn’t, necessarily controversial on its own.
Are you sure this isn’t from 2008?

Can’t use retard, because then the pun won’t work. Retard.

Disabled or retard? Wanda Sykes had some commercials about not using retard. Probably around that time. But I’m not looking that up.
