All of the celebrating about inclusiveness and railing against Republican bigotry starts to ring hollow when you realize that the DNC stance on Gaza is basically rooted in racism. You cannot take credit for fighting racism if you’re perpetuating it against this one small group. Harris hasn’t spoken yet, so I’ll give her a chance, but she needs to demonstrate the forceful leadership all these speakers have been celebrating for the past three days. If she capitulates to the party on this, she’ll be teeing up the same sort of ineffective administration that Obama’s turned out to be. That’s not good enough.

Don’t be dense. Consider the context.

The DNC stance on Gaza is a direct result of the fact that AIPAC has a metric fuckload of money they’re going to deploy against her if she comes out too strongly against the Gaza genocide. It’s utterly fucked up, but we have Citizens United to thank for that. So the choice is between walking a fine line on public statements made before the election, and basically handing Trump a massive financial shot in the arm. I’m hoping she’s planning to put Netanyahu on notice after the election, and cut off military aid after she’s sworn in.

Having now heard her speech, I wouldn’t waste too much time on that hope you expressed.

If she doesn’t come out strongly on Gaza, she just lost this convention and the election.

She really signaled that she would be better after Biden dropped out. Its proving to be that it was just lip service. She will not win if she doesn’t shift and everything about how this convention has been conducted indicates she’s not shifting.

Holy shit. Lay off it already - it’s so incredibly tiring having to drown you people out.

YES. WHAT IS GOING ON IN GAZA IS FUCKING AWFUL.

People are concerned about DOMESTIC ISSUES.

CORPORATE GREED. FOOD PRICES. HOUSING. LGBTQ+ RIGHTS. WOMENS RIGHTS.

THIS ELECTION WILL NOT BE DETERMINED BY THE CURRENT EVENTS IN GAZA.

Just stop with this shit. Don’t vote or vote trump if you think it will be better but keep your nonsense opinion to yourself.

I didn’t say it wasn’t important. It’s incredibly important. It’s not what is going to swing the average voter.

Your rhetoric is framing her as a failure because she hadnt put out a firm stance on ONE hot button issue right now.

What is happening in Gaza is genocide. It is wrong. It is awful. It is not the only thing happening. It’s not domestic. That’s what the average voter is concerned about - domestic issues.

I didn’t say it wasn’t important. It’s incredibly important. It’s not what is going to swing the average voter.

Then if it’s not going to decide anything, there’s no reason to shut up about it.

Your rhetoric is framing her as a failure because she hadnt put out a firm stance on ONE hot button issue right now.

Failure? No. I mean, I live in reality. She’s vastly more popular than Biden was, thank god. But ignoring the concerns of the electorate doesn’t make them go away. It just breeds apathy.

What is happening in Gaza is genocide. It is wrong. It is awful.

All the more reason to call for an arms embargo and keep calling for it. We spent so long talking about the moral high ground as a justification for maintaining decorum while Republicans stacked the courts and ignored laws we still have yet to prosecute. Yet we abandon morals entirely when we want to sell weapons to the head of a brutal apartheid regime to carry out genocide. Far as I’m concerned, our complicity in the latter calls into question our motivations for the former.

It is not the only thing happening. It’s not domestic. That’s what the average voter is concerned about - domestic issues.

So there’s no reason to shut up about it. We can oppose genocide and chew gum at the same time.

Okay sure - Fair points. I still think your approach does more harm than good, but i really don’t see the need to continue to have a looping conversation.

Seriously, this speech might as well have come from Biden.

There was a lot of excitement around her possibly being a departure from Biden’s agenda, and this speech was supposed to show us who she is and how she’ll govern. We got an incredibly right-wing speech after she rode on a wave of progressive momentum. I suspect that momentum will slow now. Leave it to Democrats to shoot themselves in the foot at every turn.
