The comment you responded to simply highlighted that this trick is much easier to pull with credit card than a debit card, as the creditor hasn’t yet been repaid for the credit issued.

In the USA, most power bills are the tenants’ responsibility. In the USA, virtually all internet connections are the tenants’ responsibility.
The locality hosting the services could also pass a law requiring the tenants to either bear responsibilities for, or be included in, all utility related billing.
A lot of arguments in this thread seem to be ignoring this as a solution to the legitimate problems they’re raising.

I totally read what you’re saying. My work requires me to maintain a personal cell phone (Intune business profile) and, with any OEM implementation of a smartphone OS you’re essentially paying to donate everything about you to a megacorp to sell it to another megacorp to siphon more of you’re life away from you. The beauty of modern advancements, though, is that if you don’t care to be within 20% of the “bleeding edge” of attention extraction and intention fabrication you can spend your time in communities like this and with tech like graphene and linux making few sacrifices, if any.
I don’t know about you, but the lemmy atmosphere feels a lot like that of early forums to me. Not quite the same, but the community aspect is more present.
I think my stance is that technology doesn’t suck, as is the case with most things; it’s the unchecked and rampant abuse of a given thing.

Absolutely, this is the goal. I’m going to run the first few with things ranging from simple “need a new phone? here’s what to look for” to “here’s how to install Graphene on a pixel and linux on a desktop” to break the ice and build the group. I have no idea how to garden, but judging by all the community gardens in my area I’m sure someone does.

I was gonna comment this, decided not to, then decided the info should be part of this thread either for OP or future readers, so here goes:
Enterprise Linux distributions are unbeatable for their purpose. To your point, I’ve never in my entire career had even the smallest issue maintaining one, they’re wonderful. They achieve this, though, by being a stable, truly versioned release that will never see anything beyond minor upgrades. The reason why nobody recommends server distros for gaming is because of hardware compatibility and library support, and you end up maintaining more of your own junk anyway. Got the latest gpu? Great, compile your drivers.
Enterprise Linux distros are awesome and the most painless Linux experience imaginable, as well as a great workstation experience too BUT they typically are among the worst options for gaming if you want a simple system.
