For the first alarm, I use the default iPhone setting. For the second emergency alarm, I use Entombment of a Machine by Job For A Cowboy. I already wore that song out the better part of 20 years ago and it’s guaranteed to wake you up every time

gary@piefed.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How different do you reckon the world would be if, instead of voting someone in, elections were about voting everyone else off until one stands victorious?English1·6 days agoHonestly with how much of a reality show the US already is, I’m surprised this hasn’t been tried and televised lol
I’ve been really curious about Ghost lately! I set it up in a container on pikapods not too long ago but I ended up staying on Micro.blog. Something I really liked that I had no idea about beforehand was that they have their own little Discover feed over there right? It felt too serious for me when I mostly run an old school link/microblog kinda blog and it seems SO optimized for mailing lists and subscribers
Neocities isn’t a bad option tbh. I haven’t used it in a minute but if you’re thinking about neocities I really really liked bearblog.dev too!
gary@piefed.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•The Ensh*ttification of Everything with Cory Doctorow [1:49:08]English4·9 days agoThat’s awesome! I’m in Ohio and he’s not coming anywhere near here on the tour lol but I did order the hardcover copy. I’m trying to hold off on the audiobook now so I can finish it as the actual book.
Hell yeah! I’ve been blogging for a couple years but I just use Micro.blog. I’d like to switch to something completely self hosted one of these days though.

I see a lot of potential for it to push people back to the small web too. Lots of people becoming interested in personal blogs lately, decentralized social media, the whole indie web movement, etc.
gary@piefed.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•The Ensh*ttification of Everything with Cory Doctorow [1:49:08]English7·9 days agoDefinitely informative and depressing. Honestly kinda just confirming what a lot of people have suspected all along I think; everything’s a monopoly, companies are good until they lock enough people into their platform and then they’re too big to care. Lots of really good examples and depressing fun facts weaved into it lol. One thing that makes it so interesting to me is that over the last couple of decades we’ve all been watching the enshittification of everything in real time. This book makes sense of it. That said, idk what his solutions are 100% but I gotta believe he offers some kind of clarity or way forward by the time I finish it. I have a little ways to go still.

gary@piefed.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•how did you make the switch from reddit to lemmy.. i'm trying to myself but struggling to nglEnglish4·10 days agoI’m making the same transition kinda. I moved from Digg to Reddit over ten years ago. I was on Lemmy for a while more recently and then Digg rose from the ashes a couple months ago, but I’m realizing I like Lemmy/Piefed much more. I already had a trial run on breaking my social media habits when I left twitter though. I think a big part of it is realizing you don’t need a constantly updated firehose of useless information lol I’m still very online but probably like half of what I was when I was using Reddit and twitter. Now I have a blog, read a lot of RSS for that breaking, early news and I go to Lemmy for news with social commentary from normal people who aren’t influencers. I comment more here too because I’m not competing with millions of people to have an edgy top rated comment. I think the biggest thing is embracing smaller communities and going from there.

gary@piefed.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do companies always need to grow?English22·13 days agoI hate it. It even bleeds over into performance reviews. Like you’ll never get a perfect score no matter how hard you work because you always have to be improving on something. It’s supposed to be the sure fire sign of “success” but all it does is create impossible goals and bring everyone down.
gary@piefed.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•In Praise of RSS and Controlled Feeds of InformationEnglish2·13 days agoI love it! Even the built in CSS and JavaScript customization goes a long way. I’m not creative enough to figure out anything crazy with Greasemonkey lol
gary@piefed.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•In Praise of RSS and Controlled Feeds of InformationEnglish11·14 days agoI love RSS! For the longest time I used Miniflux, and I still have an instance running, but lately I’ve just been using the Unread app on iOS. That’s one of the many great things about RSS: you’re not tied down to any specific app or platform, you can pack up and take your feeds wherever you want if you wanna try something different.
gary@piefed.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Disney reportedly lost 1.7 million paid subscribers in the week after suspending KimmelEnglish4·17 days agoThat’s how I feel about it too. Literally nothing I wanted to watch over there anyway. I’m not missing anything.
gary@piefed.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Disney reportedly lost 1.7 million paid subscribers in the week after suspending KimmelEnglish181·17 days agoAlmost everyone I know who cancelled their subscription is happily renewing it now that Kimmel is back on the air. I’m sticking with donating to PBS every month instead.
