yeah, I have been hearing horror stories about the limited supply of hyundais in canada. I doubt I would wait for the hyundai in that case. In canada you definitely want the AWD.

I hate musk as well, but I was on the verge of buying a Model Y, because it was good value for the money, Ultimately I didnt though because I test drove it and I just could not get over the compromises. Tesla’s strengths: charging network, range (better on paper than IRL), infotainment (though lacks apple car play), performance, purchasing experience. these are critical for long trips and will make a world of difference there but hardly matter for a city driver that charges at home. Tesla’s (relative) weaknesses: unfamiliar controls (lack of buttons, turn signal stalk), interior comfort (i did not care for seats or steering wheel), service network (mileage may vary), lease terms (good price but cant buy out the lease), quality control --panel gaps & creeks (better in the last model year) and then there are things that can go both ways like tesla’s autopilot is more advanced than most but phantom breaking was a deal breaker for me, I am happy with a more limited system that does not scare the shit out of me. Aesthetics, some like tesla design language and others find it very dull.
If a tesla is the right car for your family but you feel guilty because of musk I would say get the tesla and make a donation to a cause you care about.
That said, I would really ask your wife about what she cares about in a car and how she plans to use it. Have her test drive several options and see what she likes. If she makes lots of long trips and likes sparse interiors with a tech forward apporach then a tesla is going to be by far the best car for her. If she likes more familiar controls and will mainly use it as a city car/daily commute and can charge at home then I think there are many other options that she will like much more. remember that the Tesla can be the better car overall but not the best car for your needs. In my case my wife (who was the primary driver) did not like that there was nowhere to put her purse in a tesla and so for this and other reasons we went with a hyundai ioniq 5 limited. We were willing to pay a little more for a more luxury experience that fit our needs better.
It sounds like this is a rental and you have to chose between the small bettery ID3 vs the tesla or kia, is that correct? I think you should spend the extra money and you wont have to worry about running low.
It was a little confused by your comment because when I shopped the two I found the cabin interior was much better on the ionic. The Volkswagen had a lot of piano black plastic that gets dusty and fingerprinty. The ionic has soft touch plastics at all the touch points. I was looking at the top trim though. Both are good cars but the Volkswagen is probably better value for money.
there is no safe harbor right now, if you buy an EV for the next 10 or more years, you will have more than average depreciation because the tech is your and each subsequent generation will be significantly better. However buying an ICE car is even worse since nobody will want one in 10 years. the only way to get around it so buy one where the bulk of the depreciation has already happened.
