Signal is my go to. Some of my friends refuse to download it, so I just text them. I’ll use iMessage on iOS and Google Messages on Android. But if I can use Signal, I will

Those users aren’t intelligent enough to understand what the Fediverse is, why they should use it, or even how to sign up.
No repost bots, karma farming, or idiots (mostly). The learning curve to joining the fediverse filters out your average facebook/twitter type that Reddit is filled with today. Lemmy right now is how Reddit was a decade ago
Well, everything else I said stands. You’re on Beehaw, so none of that affects you. I could migrate my account there if it became an issue. Lemmy as an overall platform should still be recommended imo, because there are so many instances to join instead.
I disagree with the feditips account. I think he’s pushing people away from lemmy rather than the specific instance. I’ve had no issues on lemmy.ml and the mods here have been great. I’m pretty sure he’s just referring to lemmygrad. And like the other user who replied to you said, you could always make a new instance or join another. The political opinions of the devs means nothing if the platform is decentralized. Unlike Reddit, they don’t have power over the entire platform, just whatever instance they host, just like if I made an instance, which I can, I have complete power over it.
This is making our switch to Lemmy feel quite justified, isn’t it? Although even if Reddit was still in good shape I think the potential of a decentralized platform is much better. I probably would have migrated here whether this shitstorm happened or not.
I found that discord is mostly filled with immature teenagers. It’s tough to have a mature discussion there
I bet being MKBHD would be the best job in the world. You get all this stuff for free and then make an insane amount of money talking about it on camera.
It definitely seems like a luxury, but being able to essentially sit in a movie theater by yourself while flying in a plane sounds really nice.
I think the end goal would be AR/VR built into your glasses that are as light as current day glasses. We are probably a long time away from that, but I feel like most VR headsets right now are beta versions of this end goal.
Smart TVs are stupid and only exist to make ad revenue and sell user data. I’d pay extra for a TV like an LG C2 OLED but with no OS. Just a monitor that displays sources plugged in.
I paid $3000 to build my pc, to be an early adopter of what seems to be groundbreaking tech, sure. Gotta start saving now though lol.
Also, the first iPhone is $40k today unopened. Maybe if you buy Apple’s first VR headset and never open it, 10 years later it’ll be worth a ton?
Using Zorin OS right now and it might be my favorite Linux distro ever. It’s like a stock, good version of Windows 10 or 11 (it’s obviously not Windows but that’s just an easy comparison visually speaking). For the longest time I couldn’t get myself to fully switch to Linux due to needing to use video editing software for my job, but installing DaVinci Resolve Studio on Zorin was a breeze, and they even have an easy to follow guide for doing so.
I feel like there needs to be a pinned guide at the top of this instance explaining all of this stuff to new users.
Technically 2024 but the Apple Vision Pro headset is blowing my mind
I don’t think it’s possible due to it being decentralized. If anything goes wrong start your own instance. That’s what I think a lot of the new users don’t realize. This isn’t a reddit clone, it’s something with much greater potential
Lemmy does give me a strong nostalgic feeling of old school forums. I think the Fediverse is going to give enthusiasts what they’ve been missing. I just hope it lasts and continues to grow.
That’s what pisses me off about Bluesky. Mastodon already exists, and is not for profit. We don’t need another “decentralized” platform that intentionally doesn’t talk to the Fediverse and is trying to create its own version. Yet my fear is Bluesky will end up being mainstream and those for-profit CEOs will continue running the internet into the ground. I hope people end up realizing Mastodon already exists, and is a better version of what Bluesky wants to be.
Excellent post, and I love your sites minimal, old school design. I finally found the right corner of the internet where people actually think about this kind of thing! It’s so frustrating how over the years search engine results just give you bloated, pointless articles that exist only to rank high in SEO and get ad revenue.
I too have been using the site:reddit.com method, but it sucks to essentially only have one for-profit website as the one I use to research things.
ESPN NFL 2K5, and All-Pro Football 2K8 were very ahead of their time. In many areas, Madden has still failed to catch up to these titles.
