CAT 8 is ridiculous. By the time you would need CAT 8 it would probably be better to run fiber optics in the house. I’m looking to run Ethernet soon and will run either CAT 6 or CAT 6a depending on the difference in price but I could get away with CAT 5e easily for current needs I just want to be ready if I ever go to to multi-gig service.
What I’m saying is they would not check the line. If you reported a service outage they would tell you it was probably your modem going bad since you weren’t renting a modem from them. In order for them to check the signal and check the lines you would have to replace your modem with their modem. $120 a year for a piece of equipment that you can buy for 60 bucks it’s just so ridiculous.
What all even uses 900 MHz band anymore? I know house phones used to, but they are all 2.4 GHz now. Depending on how populated the area is I wouldn’t worry too much about the 900 MHz bands being overfull. That intersection you mentioned might be a problem though. The lack of line of sight is also an issue. t may be one of those situations where you have to try it to see if it would work or not. Depending on how much the antenna costs that may or may not be feasible.
I had Charter briefly and they refused to troubleshoot if I didn’t rent their modem. If you call them for an issue with your service their base assumption was that the problem was your equipment. They would not perform any troubleshooting until you had replaced your modem with their modem. We never even got past installation because I told the installer to take it all and cancel my order and go home because the bill was way more than they had advertised. It was supposed to be $55 a month plus normal taxes and fees with a 6-month discount that would have made it like 25 bucks a month for a bit. But in addition to the $10 month modem rental there was also a $15 fee that made no sense. When I asked I was told it was a fee because I didn’t get a bundle. Now they advertised their internet service by itself for $55 a month. You of course got discounts if you bundled in phone or television. But they also advertised each service on its own for a specific price. Apparently if you chose to buy that service from them or the price they advertised it as they charged you a $15 a month fee for buying the product at the price advertised without buying another product to go with it. I was already ticked off about the $10 a month modem rental fee but I wasn’t going to pay an extra $15 a month on top of that for crummy basic cable internet.
Get a Motorola with DOCIS 3.1. Motorola makes great modems! You’ll also need to arrange to return the Comcast equipment to the company or else they’ll keep charging your dad the $15 a month.
Are you plugged directly into your router or into a switch? What model is your network card on your computer? What model is your router or any switched in between your computer and the router? There is probably a device that is a 10/100 device instead of a 10/100/1000 device but we need more info to diagnose the issue.
What’s the service? Like the upload and download? But yeah you could probably get a better router if your Wi-Fi is that unstable and just replace your current router as long as your router is not built into the modem but if your router combos with the modem you can put your Gateway into bridge mode.
I really like speedof.me. it gives you a more accurate view of how your internet worked because it will graph what your download and upload looked like for the time it was testing.
So I just got gigabit fiber and because I didn’t have time to research and buy my own router I just let them give me the router from the ISP as for at least the first few months they’re giving me a rental credit so it’s actually free for the time being. I love that thing and of course provides good speed and all that but the Wi-Fi is impressive the house is about 2,400 Square ft one level approximately 75 ft long 20 something feet wide the router has always been in the spare bedroom / office which is off center but close to the center of the house. And the Wi-Fi signal has always had trouble reaching the master bedroom on the farthest end of the house. For years I’ve used a Wi-Fi extender and that has been fine and has worked well but it didn’t matter what router I got the Wi-Fi signal never reached where I needed to go.
The new router that my ISP provided is calix gigaspire 6.1 and they advertise it as doing 4,500 square feet. I have Wi-Fi outside a few hundred feet from the router on the far end of the house so I get halfway down the driveway before I lose my Wi-Fi signal.
