Hierarchical institutions inevitably come to be under the control of self-serving scumbags who are really only notable for the fact that they could, would and did do absolutely whatever it took to gain power.
Different sorts of hierarchical institutions - for instance, governments or businesses - exhibit the consequences of being controlled by self-serving scumbags in different ways, and if one looks narrowly, one can make the case that this one is better or worse than another.
But if one pulls back far enough to look at them overall, it’s pretty much just six of one and half a dozen of another.
That’s what they’re paid for.
Here’s a harsh reality - political power is a commodity, and all too many of those who possess it do the same thing with it as those who possess any other commodity do - they sell it to the highest bidder.
It doesn’t matter what the ideal is - that’s the reality.
