  • Ultima Underworld, I feel like getting back into retro gaming, so the first thing I have to do is to follow the tradition: read the manual. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t have known I could make popcorn with a lit torch; that is an early prototype of “combine items” like in survival horror games.

I have tried a little Ultima 7: The Serpent Isle just to test how it runs on my machine; they definitely made sure that you pass the test of the history of Britannia before you can even continue the game.

Really like the old days when they still made booklets like History of Britannia (as told by Kyle the Younger), just so that you get immersed in the game world before you even play the game.

  • “Working with engineers as my profession”

“Henry Ford over a hundred years ago called the assembly line.”

Engineering IS a multidisciplinary career; you are not going to do finite element analysis on a stack of paper, I don’t even think governments will accept a full-blown hand sketch drawing. Everyone will at least want a cad file, everyone will want to use software with interoperability, paper doesn’t do that…

  • Yeah, but I mean if you are fully qualified for the job and the company is being run efficiently, and there are no projects that have nasty extra demands/complaints that deviate from the norm and the skillset of the company. Why need tertiary skills aside from your boss having a sense of humor “yOU sHoUlD leARN thIS, i pAy yoU tO lEaRN”?

Unless you caught me learning something so remote from my core work, so much work for little improvement margin, then you’ve got every right to question me.

Besides, what I have been mentioning are NOT tertiary skills; they are becoming primary skills, but no one actually wants to admit that. It is a constant reminder to your superior that they can’t elevate you even if they want to.

It sounds to me you are talking about a cultural problem called conformity and KPI tunnel vision. Sometimes it becomes so stiff that even working efficiently requires permission because someone is adverse to change.

  • I am not sure about your projects. Other than InDesign, all I mentioned are essentially project /client requirements; daily operation in the site office is going to be crippled in one way or another if you don’t know how to use those software. Sure, you don’t have to know two drawing software programs; they are being framed as “extra” on job ads, but it is really handy when there is an opportunity to make an impression on the client with 3D.

As an Engineer, I need to know:

-At least two professional-grade drawing softwares

    -Word processing skills

-Presentation skills in documentation, such as InDesign

    -Excel

-Quick comprehension in a mountain of contractual documents

    -Digital Document Management

    -Two languages minimum

I have already skipped a bunch of soft skills, we are not paid enough, while watching my Boomer PM taking 3 days to write three questions to client consultants.

  • It’s a satire :)

I get that you are upset with AAA games. Honestly, I’ve managed to avoid them for a long time. But I think Hello games is not an ideal studio either; Murray did lie about the feature at release, the updates have only met minimum of professional standards, and 10 years later it is still a bland tofu of a space game, wrapped in years of technical debt, while NMS being a test bench for LNF as a fanbase look to the other way…they are doing ok…

I just find it funny that in a sea of garbage (not as a puddle), people will grab anything shiny and call it a diamond, while ignoring the gem cave by the shore and then ask, “What is wrong? Why are you laughing?”

The good devs never needed a redemption arc; never needed a cultural reframe to be good.

  • Oh no, Hello Games didn’t steal any limelight from anyone, they have been keeping their head down. That’s on the fanbase, the myth and the hype by inflating their achievements. I can respect the perseverance without mythologising it. Hello Games did right by continuing to improve their game — but that doesn’t erase how the industry and fan culture turn necessary professionalism into legend, nor should they turn a blind eye to the state of the game. Secondly, one strike and you’re out is a bad approach. Who on earth is going to fix the mess?

But this is why we diverge – we should support them if LNF is a good game, all roads lead to Rome, I don’t think they need another redemption arc from us, right? :)

It is a simple remedy; do right by where they failed, namely, launching LNF without shenanigans, and let the work speak for itself; that’s the real redemption.

  • Now you understand the reality, sometimes you just have to get the words out somehow. XD

And that’s ok, sneer all you want, i dont expect a change to anything, this is an extremely unpopular opinion: I still think the redemption arc is bullshit, HG has achieved the minimum professionally, and now HG being crowned as the beacon of the industry is a kneejerk reaction to the action of the industry: expensive DLC, abandoning games, scam early access…

While ignoring the true indies/open source games that work for nothing but pure passion.

Thanks for your time to respond.
