I think it’s just the convenience for most of the people out there. Even tho a lot of us aren’t even using the phone for calling anymore.
That blinking light is the proximity sensor, it basically lets the phone know when it is close to an object… for example, when you are on a phonecall and you put the phone to your face, it will know that your face is there so it will turn off the screen so it doesn’t cause phantom touches from your face.
