People have this untrue assumption that black cars and black interiors sell easier and clean better.
None of that is true.
Black cars show scratches like no other and black leather shows wrinkles like no other.
But lets say none of that is true.
People when buying a car do not prefer black on black. End of story.
Any interior color other that white or black is the easiest and any exterior color but black is better at hiding scratches.
Sure, if you put that package in Kharmann Ghia type body but the box never made sense. The thing people today seem to ignore is that there was the Kharmann Ghia when the 914 was around which made the styling Porsche chose even more of an odd duck.
I feel the same way. The 924 controversy I understood, but the move to water cooled was an obvious evolution. I not sure how people thought air cooled only would suffice forever. The 914 never fit and because there was the Kharmann Ghia it bothered people even more.
It’s not that they’re not awesome, they just not Porsche’s. They may be Audi’s, they may be something else, but nowhere in the historical design catalogue does a 914 fit. You could argue that it goes all the way back to the first Porsche car but that was an organic shape, not a box.

You’re right it started off as a Rover I-4 now it’s a Toyota V-6. the one I drove had a BMW s52 I-6 but I guess that isn’t standard. I haven’t looked at them closely in a loong time. Seems like the new Elmira you can get as a turbo I-4 or a supercharged V-6, very cool. If you ever get the chance to drive one, definitely take it.
I’ve never driven a McLaren, but I have driven all kinds of other cars and the car I’ve driven that feels the most driver oriented is the Lotus Exige. I think 430hp stock with BMW 6 cylinder on a 1000kg car and can easily be tuned to 550. Doesn’t really have any electronic tech to make you a good driver. It’s a street legal track car and your ass feels connected to the road. Totally different class of car but it is a drivers car and it is not boring at any time. They have Emeya coming out soonish?
