It’s very clear what they offer with the sub(minus the fact that “unlimited” isn’t an amount, but rather unlocking the 50-day limit on unopened files).
It’s a clear-cut distraction free device. More features kinda defeats some of the purpose =P
So the Google drive part is completely free. BUT, it might not work as you’d like. What it lets you do is download PDFs(or docx/pptx converted to PDFs by OneDrive) and upload PDF exports of notebooks/PDFs. The problem is, it’s not a sync service. So, if you download file A.pdf, write something to it, and then upload back to GDrive, you’ll have a duplicate of A.pdf that’s the newer version.
You can totally SSH into the device and transfer files with curl(which basically utilises the web interface) iirc, or just directly copy their proprietary files format notebooks too, altho they will be unreadable without a working third-party tool for that version. What I’d use the SSH for is full notebook backups rather than a normal way of transferring. Then again, I do have toltec(the community package manager) on an older version of the OS to run a terminal emulator with VIM and directly upload files to GitHub(so mostly just C code) ;)
the easy option would be to save a dictionary pdf, set it as a favourite file, and use the document drawer to quickly access it and just search the word in it
If you’re in a version pre 3.3, there is a known bug that causes data loss
best solution might be to duplicate the file from the mobile/desktop app that has not yet detected this change
There’s no gestures, instead it’s a menu option under notebook settings at the bottom of the toolbar
In the case of the rocketbook, from my perspective, it’s a bit cumbersome (haven’t used it tho =P)
I’d say give the rM a try. They have a generous 100-day satisfaction guarantee, so if you can spend on it, try it to see whether you like it or not. Your usecase definitely seems like something that’ll fit the reMarkable, and having a bunch of templates and the ability to load in any PDF file and annotate it directly is very powerful
The way handwriting is “linked” to the text needs a little getting used to, since manipulating the text also changes the handwritten content. Think of the text feature like a typewriter with thick margins and not a word processor or something where you can have text boxes and move it anywhere
I have tried getting a dictionary file once, but it was sort of jank. Pretty sure if I searched for one, I’ll find one where you can search for words much more easily
It kinda irks me when people are like “Oh why can I not have text boxes and move it around”. Like dude, if you wanted to do that, get the iPad? The fact that the text is fixed actually makes sure I don’t overthink where to place text. Instead, all the handwriting is around the text. I dunno, I like it
