My cable modem is downstairs and I want to relocate it along with my network rack upstairs. I don’t feel like buying and running new coax and drilling a hole into my upstairs room when I already have a 10g capable fiber line connecting the two floors together. I want to create a VLAN that will carry just the WAN connection so I can have a virtual coax cable to my upstairs UDM Pro SE.
Coming from the cable modem, it will connect into port 1 on a Unifi 8-Enterprise switch set as VLAN 100 (Internet only). From the same switch, the 10g fiber plugged into the SFP+ port will go upstairs and connect into a Unifi aggregation switch - this will be a trunk port. From this point, a port on my 24-Enterprise switch upstairs will be assigned a port to VLAN 100 (Internet only) which will plug into port 9 (WAN) on the UDM Pro SE. Am I missing anything?
I attached a diagram of my network to show the topography. All switches are connected to the aggregation switch. SpaceRex covered this in one of his videos. If I can get this to work, it will be a huge convenience and nice to have my network gear out of a main living area in the downstairs.
Here is a link to the SpaceRex video detailing how he configured the VLAN for Internet access to his router upstairs:
Questions
- When creating the VLAN in Unifi, should the DHCP server option and DNS multicast options be turned off? I don’t see any reason for these to be on seeing that no clients will be assigned an IP address from VLAN 100 (Internet only).
