Hello networking gurus and home admins!

So I’ve been dipping my toes into home networking off and on for awhile now, and I’m at the point where I’d like to be able to monitor network traffic more easily (preferably for free!). It ain’t much, but it’s only for a small college apt, so it doesn’t really need to be.

First off, here’s the current setup:

  • Netgear C6250 - Used only as a Modem/Router combo
  • TP-Link TL-SG1008MP - 8 Port Gigabit PoE+ Switch
  • Ubiquiti UniFi 6 Lite - Home WAP (Powered by the aforementioned switch)

My original plan was to just flash the C6250 with OpenWRT, however only the R model is supported. On the flip side of things though, I happen to have a knockoff YunCore AX820 laying around that’s already been flashed with OpenWRT, and I noticed that it has its own routing capabilities!

So the actual question then, is will I notice any substantial change in network speed/quality if I use the C6250 as just a modem and the AX820 (also powered by the PoE switch) as just a router? Or am I missing some obvious better solution to the problem I’m trying to solve? I’m pretty cheap, but I’m also a fan of elegant solutions, so feel free to pitch in 2 cents or more.

Thanks!
