My home unraid server is my homelab’s main workhorse. I would love for it to have a GPU for the rare transcode or steam game streaming, but I’ve noticed my GPU pulls 35w even when idle. That’s about 30% of my entire homelab’s energy usage and not good in my 24/7 server.

So I was thinking, what if I bought an eGPU enclosure, connected it to the server via TB4, and put it on a smart power strip that I could toggle remotely?

I can’t think of any reason this shouldn’t work, but I’ve also never seen anything like it before. Does anyone know of a reason this wouldn’t work?
