Another good write up showing that the Government is misleading the public about the state of public finances and the economy, and also benefit sanctions.
Given the way they stonewall and just repeat their talking points when challenged suggests to me that they’re simply lying about a crisis to justify gutting services for tax cut handouts
One thing to note regarding the sanctions, Luxon has formed a government, he’s in power for another 2 3/4 years - so this isn’t any electioneering bait its deliberate cruelty.
Luxon’s willingness to lie, and to punish the poor is a very weird contrast to his supposed Christianity. Although given the lengths he & his (former?) church went to in order to hide the weirdness of the sermons he was listening to perhaps it is no surprise. Its become common to require all muslim’s to condemn terrorist, perhaps all christians need to called upon to disown these not very christian, christian politicians?
It’s electioneering in that it is to create damage control ahead of dropping or delaying any promised reward to those that voted for the income tax cut.
It can allow them to defer until they claim that NZ is not fragile, which would probably be as a re-election campaign: vote for us because WE fixed a fragile economy, let’s keep the momentum so that we can let people keep more of their hard earned income.
This government has shown they are not financially literate, either intentionally (to mislead) or on purpose (because they are idiots). This was clear even before the election.
I think the problem is a lot of people don’t really pay attention.
I worry about how many people believe this.
I do quite like the data driven approach that Bernard and team take. I am a cynic when it comes to the blame game that the politicians play. But this one seems particularly egregious.
The real woe is how easily the public is duped to believing bullshit.
