#USA / New York governor apologizes after implying Israel is justified to destroy Gaza

New York Governor Kathy #Hochul apologized for controversial remarks she made at a Jewish event suggesting Israel would be justified to destroy #Gaza in response to attacks.

Hochul stated that if #Buffalo was attacked by Canada, “there would be no Canada the next day,” implying Israel has the right to defend itself and ensure attacks don’t happen again.

Her comments went viral and were seen as inappropriate and hurtful by some. She apologized for the poor choice of words.

Israel’s strikes left over 29,000 dead in Gaza per Palestinian reports. The UN has called for a ceasefire. The remarks were in reference to Israel’s offensive in Gaza following a deadly October 2022 attack on Israel by #Hamas that killed over 1,200 Israelis, according to Israel.

Hochul clarified she supports Israel’s right to self-defense but believes Palestinian civilian casualties should be avoided and more humanitarian aid provided to Gaza.

Hochul has held elected office in New York as a Democrat, serving as a county clerk, congresswoman, and lieutenant governor before becoming governor in 2021. Pro-Israel individuals and political groups have been significant donors and supporters of Hochul’s political campaigns. She has actively courted support from the pro-Israel community, especially as governor of New York.
