My alternator belt snapped about a third in, so it is still connected with 2/3rds about. The broken part started flapping around which is what me realize something was wrong. I pulled over and decided to leave it in the parking lot in the mountains about 60 miles away from my house and take the ride back while I had it. I originally thought it was the timing belt because I am dumb, but did more research and realized it was just the alternator belt. (Probably would have driven home if I knew this)
I have three options:
- Get it towed back home and fix it myself in the comfort of my own garage
- Bring the proper tools up to the location and attempt to fix it myself
- Cut off the tag end and drive it back as is.
I am primarily wondering if it is safe to drive it back with the belt partially broken. I assume it is and even if it fully snaps I can just not stall my car, and make it home, maybe lose some power steering and headlights in the worst-case scenario.
60miles. Hell to the no
