So my car battery died while I was in my car. I called AAA and when he jumpstarted my Nissan Altima it started smoking and overheating. I had to tow it home.

Does anyone know if this just means i need a whole new battery? Or can this be an engine problem?

Because if it’s just a battery problem then I dont think it would ned to tow it to a mechanic. I could just change my battery myself at home.

Any advice would help.

    DIYer advice: Your post isn’t very clear. But here are some points:

    1. A bad battery will not cause the engine to overheat.
    2. If you have the 4 cylinder 2.5 engine, a slipping serpentine belt will cause the battery to go flat (because it’s not turning the alternator), and cause the engine to overheat (because it’s not turning the water pump). (I don’t think this applies to the V6 3.5 engine.)
    3. " started smoking and overheating". What started smoking? How do you know it was overheating (did the temperature gauge on the dash go up into the red zone?)?
    4. Have you checked the coolant level? Is it low?
    5. Have you checked the engine oil level, on the dipstick? Is it low?

      Oh gosh wow ok. I will definitely need to pay more attention. Im not a car person at all so I am not knowledgeable at any of this. My friend is gonna take a look at my car so i will check on these points with him.
