Let’s say you’re driving on the 5 and you are about to exit. What is the proper way to exit if the lane you’re trying to exit on is like bumper to bumper all the way.
Should you just try and cut someone off all bad?
Should you wait like an idiot till someone lets you in? Keep in mind the lane you’re in is going fairly quickly so you’re risking an accident.
Should you just not exit there and go to the next exit?
Should you jump the double solid lines early. In other words merge onto the exit lane way before you’re supposed to.
What is the proper thing to do? I’ve been going to the next exit sometimes but man it really adds like an extra 20 min since 2 freeways merge after this exit
Should you just try and cut someone off all bad?
No, you should never “cut someone off bad” as you phrased it. If it’s between missing an exit vs any potentially unsafe maneuver, you always detour and reroute.
Should you wait like an idiot till someone lets you in?
No, someone letting you in seems to imply the expectation that they slow down. You need to speed up if you are trying to fill a gap or perform any type of merging behavior really.
When people say nobody is letting me in, they are usually subconsciously and unintentionally riding the brake when they should be at least maintaining speed if not accelerating.
driving on the 5
Wait in line like everyone else? Everyone hates those entitled douchbags that think they’re more important than the people already waiting in line
I’d cross the double lines early. Failing that, I would take the L and get off at next exit. I hate inconveniencing others.
I would slow down a bit next to the lane and wait for the best opportunity to move over, usually when the traffic moves forward a bit, there will be someone not paying attention and leave a big enough gap.
