So I went and checked. That thing retails for €1100 around here. And I don’t know about you guys, but when I buy a phone that costs that kinda money I expect a solid piece of hardware. Not something where the manufacturer decided to skimp out of rigidity because they were being cheap. Not because of some aesthetic choice, no this is just cheap.
And they expect these things to last 7 years? Yeah right.

One of the possibilities I semi-unironically expressed was that Google is willing to promise 8 years of software updates because judging by their track record, there won’t be any Pixel 8s left alive after year 5, which means there won’t be any customers to complain when they break that promise.
They have their A line of phones that get released at a later date, usually like half the price. But I don’t know if they’re releasing an 8A or not. Also that’s the unlocked / full price, not with a carrier discount and stuff
€729 in this country. The pro model is €1100. Either way, this is not acceptable for an expensive piece of hardware that we are expected to carry on our person at all times.
Verizon just gave me $800 for a Pixel 5 to upgrade to a Pixel 8 for $869 (before trade in) over 3 years.
So I’m paying like $1.60 a month for the Pixel 8. If I have to take that back due to an issue screen, I will continue to appreciate my $60 Pixel.
That does not mean this issue is ok, just that my circumstances (and anyone willing to run Verizon) should see if they can get a steal via an old used phone traded in for basically a new phone.
this. verizon is not about to give you a phone for basically free. they want to make bank too.
why would i trade in my older phone for one that has dents in the screen from components pressing against it, anyway? they could offer to pay me and i’d refuse lmao

I’d buy an iPhone for that money tbh
I should add that I took the price of the 8 Pro here. As the Pro is the big shot flagship model here.

Given Google’s track record they’ll just cancel the pixel line and say no more updates after year 2
You just triggered memories of the Nexus 5. Loved that phone. But alas Google stopped supporting it after like 2.5 years.
That was my all time favourite phone
Ditto. So light and easy to handle.
Unfortunately the power button gave up as well.
I still use mine as an OBD2 display! Luckily the app is old as the hills too, idk if I’d be able to get the play store working right.
my 4y/o pixel 3 is Definity hitting a lot of programed/planned obsolescence.
Google wouldn’t even support the phone for 7 years anyway
The Pixel 8 starts at €699.
I think that’s similar to the combined cost of all the smartphones I’ve owned, over more than a decade

I wonder if I could buy one for €500 and tell them not to worry about the rest.

You may FEEL like you paid $60 but that’s just the pricing model and marketing working!
Did you get your pixel 5 for free?
Cause if you didn’t you paid them more than $60.
You have them $60 and a working paid off phone.
Let’s say that it’s worth $350- you paid $410 and signed a contract that means you can’t leave for 3 years or you’ll pay full price.
