I told my buddy I was looking to buy a car and he told me his dad was looking to sell his Silver 2010 Chevy HHR for 3K. He doesn’t know the miles for sure but he said he thinks it’s under 100K he is still waiting to find out the exact miles. All it needs is a battery (They will buy and install it.) I’m 16 and just need a ride from school and work. If you think I should go with something else lmk! I have 5K to put down on something but would like to just pay something off so I can save more.

    I actually like the weird look and think it’s a pretty cool ride. I’ve been in it before and liked it a lot. My biggest concern is i’m not sure if it’s reliable or not so I don’t want to put 3k into something and have to consistently fix shit you know.

    Good ride. Under 100k miles is a plus. On my third one, wife wanted another dog friendly car.

    I had one for about five years that I bought used with about 80k on it. The front suspension on them is clunky, in the literal sense of the word. The mpg isn’t stellar, and the interiors are cheap. They have issues with the steering sometimes because the electric motor assist goes out (no hydraulic power steering in them!)

    There’s also a u-joint style linkage in the steering column that can lock up if you don’t make sure to keep it well greased. If you need a jump start and use the remote jumper attachments under the hood, you can inadvertently wipe your car’s computer and have to have it reprogrammed. The battery is in the back under the floor, and the rear hatch can’t be opened without removing an interior panel if your battery is dead, so that’s an annoying pita. Oh, and the blind spots suck.

    For a 2010 I’d try to talk them down to 2k and understand that you’ll have to live with all the annoying idiosyncrasies of the vehicle.

        Drivetrain refers to things such as the gearbox, mostly, but can include other related stuff that includes the axle shafts that connect to each wheel (in your case, two axle shafts to your front wheels because it’s a front wheel drive car), the CV joints and boots (the little boots at the end of each axle that contain the grease that keeps the joints that connect to the wheels to keep them lubricated) it’s basically what interacts with your powertrain (engine) to move your car!

    If you are in a rust belt make sure you look at the gas lines under drivers side. they rust out and cause leaking. it is a 600- 700 dollar repair

    I helped my 17 year old daughter buy one of these… paid 3k for one with about 100k miles. There may be a steering column rattle that is next to impossible to fix, but other than that it has been easy to maintain, cheap to fix, and is a good runner. Reminds me of driving a go kart, which means it is FUN.

    Had a 2006, POS! Terrible in even light snow. Back when GM filed bankruptcy. Bought new, nothing but problems. Took emaculent care of it.

    Yes! I learned how to drive in a 2007. Make sure to get a manual. They’re super practical, good on gas, was my dad’s first manual car in ages, taught me and my cousin, and the clutch lasted 270k miles before we sold it. We also never had to do any major repairs. Only issue was the evap canister went bad at like 230k. But it didn’t affect drivability so we didn’t worry about it.

    Aside from somewhat cheap feeling interiors, they’re decent cars. You could get 200k+ miles out of them with routine maintenance

    At the risk of being downvoted, I’ll be the contrarian on this one.

    The HHR was the worst car I’ve ever owned, and it wasn’t close. It was very slow, had constant problems, handled poorly, and had a 5-speed that almost made me want the automatic because of how bad it was. Even though there were a couple nice features in the interior, everything felt really cheap, and I say that being no stranger to cheap cars. The seats were also a bit uncomfortable and give you basically no support in turns. And while the styling is subjective, the visibility is absolutely awful. You’d think you’d be able to see out okay because of how many windows it has, but they’re all too small to be able to see well.

    I would really, really, really spend the extra money (if you even need to) and get something like a Corolla, or something in that vein.

    My mom had one and it was an awful car if I’m being honest, but I’ve also consistently had horrible luck with anything gm. Make sure the ignition switch recall has been done because if not the car has a tendency to turn off mid drive, lock the steering wheel and kill the airbags. Happened to my mom on the freeway.

    For 3k any running car with under 100k is going to be worth it, my mom has had her 2011 since it was new and it still drives like shit, but it does still drive
