Trying to figure out how this could’ve happened. I drive a mk7 VW GTI ~70,000 miles, have had it for 5 years or so, previous owner was a family who took great care of it, drove super conservatively, no damage/accidents. I’ve always have taken great care of it: keep up with timely oil changes, never get into boost while it’s cold, drive fairly conservatively, etc. I traveled over the weekend (I flew) and I left my car at a valet parking place near the airport (they park your car in their huge garage and hold onto your keys until you return). The place had tons of great reviews and shuttle buses to/from this place were full of people. I dropped the car off totally fine, running smoothly, no issues. I pick the car up when I return, start driving off (slowly, under 1500rpms as it’s cold outside), and it feels shaky, there’s no power there, and the EPC light comes on. It virtually loses all power, and I pull off to the side of the road, attempt to restart the engine, it can barely stay alive in idle, and I can feel the engine shaking. I get a tow to a VW dealership who tells me (excuse me if I get some technical terms wrong here) that a valve is blown, piston bent, cylinder head cracked, blown gaskets, and I’ll basically need half a new engine. They asked me how hard I was pushing it when this happened, to which I replied “not at all!” and they were very surprised. My question: is this something that can just…happen? No obvious cause: coolant system fine, temps were cold if anything, it in theory was just sitting in a heated parking garage when this happened. Am I crazy to think about the possibility of a valet person taking my car for a spin and pushing it so hard it caused this damage? I’m really at a loss.
There is no such thing as half an engine, you have major block and head issues, if you can’t hold the venue or valet service legally responsible then your best course of action is to put in a used engine, but install will also be expensive and you would want to go through seals, timing belt etc.
