So I’m interested in buying this laptop soon (end of Dec for offers): https://www.amazon.com/HP-Touchscreen-i9-13900H-Backlit-Windows/dp/B0CCSYCY9R/ref=mp_s_a_1_24?crid=3K8D7PG111650&keywords=HP%2B2023%2BEnvy&qid=1700913168&sprefix=hp%2B2023%2Be%2Caps%2C2476&sr=8-24&th=1
Specs suit my needs to a T. Now I just need to know… is HP good? I’ve heard quite a bit of criticism about them of late. I’d personally prefer ASUS (and will keep an eye out), but I don’t think I’ll get an equivalent rig from them for a similar price.
I need my laptop to last 4-5 years so please help!
Looks good. Get a HP Care Pack to give you additional warranty and damage protection coverage.
Sold by non authorized reseller. Likely reduced/no warranty. Laptop may have been opened to upgrade RAM/SSD.
I’m not a big fan of HP since I’ve had various issues with them over the years (sleep mode issues/dedicated gpu detection/lackluster driver support). Also, the cooling on the ENVY chassis isn’t very good so it will throttle at sustained gaming loads. I’d suggest going with Lenovo or ASUS.
A common issue with these thin & light gaming laptops is the GPU may run at or near max tgp (in this case 90w) but the CPU will alternate between boost and then drop to 45w base causing fps fluctuation.
If you do go with this laptop look into limiting your CPU’s PL1/PL2 in throttlestop to around 70w and undervolt the 4060. You want the best performance that is stable within your laptop’s cooling budget. Download HWInfo64 to monitor if any cores are throttling and monitor your “CPU Package Power” for big fluctuations to fine tune until the graph is roughly linear. Gaming will be much more stable.
