Thinking about getting a EV. Just curious why you got yours. The reasons I can think of are:

  • Environmentally friendly 🌵
  • Cheaper Fuel ⚡️
  • They are cool/trendy 😎
  • Lower maintenance 🔧

Is there anything surprising that you found out after you bought it?

After owning EVs for a decade I found out a few things that caused me to recently give up and go with a conventional hybrid.

    1. Electricity is no longer cheap. It now costs me .28/kwh. I’m not saving much compared to gas.
    2. I’m not getting incentives anymore on EVs so they aren’t cheaper to buy either.
    3. In CA you get to pay an extra fee on your registration just by owning them.
    4. They chew through tires
    5. Public charging and distance charging is annoying. Tesla’s are by far the easiest but stopping still sucks.
    6. Insurance is usually higher.
    7. You fixate on your battery health and babying the charging parameters to keep it healthy
    8. There’s literally no affordable 3-row EV SUVs. It’s a soon to be released Hyundai or an $85k Tesla or Rivian. In all cases the efficiency sucks and it costs even more to charge them (see #1)
