Thinking about getting a EV. Just curious why you got yours. The reasons I can think of are:
- Environmentally friendly 🌵
- Cheaper Fuel ⚡️
- They are cool/trendy 😎
- Lower maintenance 🔧
Is there anything surprising that you found out after you bought it?

There are many reasons people choose EVs and it’s usually more than one. My list in no particular order is as follows, but #3 was my single largest reason. I wanted to make my own fuel and control the cost for regional driving. Now, I make more power every year than my all electric home and EV use.
Be a good steward of the planet: Use our limited fossil fuel resources wisely. Eliminate or minimize air pollution. Minimize CO2 - a GHG byproduct from transport emissions. This desire can be from a religious perspective (protecting God’s creation) or an environmental perspective (preserve the earth for future generations), or both.
National security: Global petroleum markets fund unfriendly countries and terrorism. Oil is responsible for costly, both in lives and dollars, foreign conflicts. Oil and natural gas are needed for plastics and petrochemicals for now, but we need to make progress on electrification and work toward reducing our need to burn most of it.
Greater personal independence: Gasoline cannot be made at home, but electricity can. If I can make my own energy, then I have control over the source and cost of my energy. Greater resilience in case of outages with V2L/V2H or home energy storage. Lower operational and maintenance needs/costs. Home charging convenience, a completely different paradigm that eliminates local ‘refueling’ time, if you can charge at home.
Latest technology and performance: Auto or technology enthusiasts (or both) prefer vehicles with excellent safety, performance, efficiency, and the latest technology. The vehicle can get better over time with software updates that add new features. Pre-conditioning the vehicle cabin even in enclosed spaces for greater comfort.
American made vehicles and “fuel”: Electricity isn’t imported like oil. Electricity is generated, distributed, and used locally, supporting local jobs, whether it comes from solar, wind, hydroelectric, natural gas, or coal. The most American made vehicles are electric with the top four being Tesla EVs.
Some other reasons: Quiet, no combustion or exhaust One-pedal driving Autonomous vehicle features EVs become cleaner as the grid gets cleaner or you install your own energy production/storage. Possible HOV lane benefits. Federal and state incentives that can lower purchase cost. However, higher registration fees can be punitive if you don’t drive many miles.
