This was exactly why I asked. My car v6 takes 4.5 quarts, I buy a 5 quart jug every single time and with that I fill the filter totally up then dump the rest into the car, it’s always slightly over max.

Though since ownership the car has leaked a small bit of oil when doing oil changes at 5k miles I’ll get about 4 quarts back out, though I promise the other quart slowly is left in my driveway 😅 you can see every exact spot I’ve parked tiny little oil spot

Edit. I should also add that I’ve never noticed any froth or anything odd on my oil cap or in the oil either was just curious due to what I said above, thank you :)

Technically you shouldn’t pre fill filters unless the car has sat for along time. And if you do prefill filters you defiantly shouldn’t pour it in the big hole. You should slowly pour it into the side smaller holes and let it slowly filter through the material otherwise if you get shit in the big hole it will be going straight to your journal bearings.

The odds anything bad happens is super small if you are clean but better to be safe that sorry especially considering there’s enough residual oil in the engine that the 2 seconds at the absolute most it takes to fill the filter won’t be an issue.

But this is as far as I understand atleast. If a mechanic knows more please correct me but this is what I’ve always heard/done.

If it’s fresh clean oil then it doesn’t really make much of a difference which side you pour oil into but whatever makes you feel more comfortable. General opinion is that it isn’t necessary but prefilling doesn’t hurt and most mechanics I know do it as a just in case anyway.

Every time I’ve changed my own oil the filter had instructions to fill it with oil before installing it.

I thought oil flowed into the big hole where it screws in, was pressurized and the flows out the side holes.
