It is a tad more than needed but it shouldn’t do any harm. The main reason why you don’t want to over fill is so that the crankshaft doesn’t beat the oil and cause it to foam.
First of you never read a oil dipstick upside down it won’t show the correct level the oil Will drip down and will show like of it’s over fill double check it.
Too much oil in your engine will cause it to foam and not protect like it should be.
If its smoking, too much. If its not, its fine
That’s not the only thing that can happen from over filled oil. You can aerate the oil with the crankshaft counterweights
Yeah, and then it’ll smoke
Atleast hold it horizontly , holding like this could have made the oil flow downwards making it look like its overfilled
I can imagine somebody holding it like this, showing a clueless customer, and as the oil continues to drip down telling them “omg the oil level keeps on rising! Something is seriously wrong with your engine!”
I say the same thing of every picture of a dipstick I see.
Look at the car in the background, the picture is either taken from above or the car is on the wall.
The correct answer 👆
I have to assume if the oil line moved before it was taken OP wouldn’t have used this picture.
no
Keep holding the stick like that and soon your engine will be double full of oil, you can see that the oil is flowing UP the stick and giving you a fake reading. Like every man, you need to learn to hold your dipstick correctly and never place it in the wrong port
How the heck do you put the dipstick in the wrong port??!! I get tilting it, easy to do but wtf are you doing probing around an engine with a dipstick
r/woosh
This looks like you are holding it upright and letting it drip down the stick. Dip it properly!
It’s fine. I purposely overfill my cars by about a half quart to lower the chances of oil starvation.
Like everyone.elaw said, it’s over but it’s would be ok, if you super worried just get a small hose (E.g aquarium air hose) put in down where the dip stick goes and draw excess oil out using a syringe or dripper bottle, don’t suck! :) , always hold the dip stick horizontal or point down so you can a accurate reading, the oil should touch the top level indicator dot.(thr bottom dot indicate bare minimum level)
If you are trying to check your own oil at least don’t flip the dipstick. How do you even check it accurately upside down? Gravity will lie to you
Yep, that’s way too much oil. You’ll need to drain a quart or so. Maybe a bit more.
Maybe a little over from the top dot (1cm) or so but that looks like a full quart. Definitely have it removed or if you did it yourself just remove your filter and dump it twice if you don’t have a suction pump.
Check again. You‘re holding the stick upside down so the oil drips back above the line.
If it wad above the left dot, it‘s too much. Too much oil can cause sloshing which introduces air bubbles which can starve your engine out of oil as the pump can‘t pick up the oil.
If it was above the second line by like 1mm, it‘s fine, if it‘s more than 5mm and a shop did the oil change, take it back and make them take out the surplus and put back in the correct ammout.
I had a friend who did his own oil change on a 90’s Ford Escort. He drained the old oil out, then filled it up right to the rocker cover filler hole.
He started it and had problems and then called me over. When we drained it afterwards there were lots of metallic flakes in it, but it still ran as shit as ever once the correct oil was put in it.
