I’m not discounting what everyone else is saying (I kind of am tbh), but unless you have or currently do own one please stop parroting the internet. I don’t know the particular history of this car but I do know that if you do the preventative maintenance and don’t abuse her, she’ll likely be very reliable. First thing I’d do is a complete pre purchase inspection, then make sure you attend to the major areas of concern. Starting from the rear, drain, inspect and replace the diff fluid with the latest bmw spec. Smg change that to Redline 75/90. Rod bearings and Vanos line (I’d advise 5w/50 or 15w/50 redline not 10w/60 redline though as it’s viscosity is actually higher than 15w/50 at low temps). Throttle actuators although if/when they go you can still limp home and there’s no catastrophic damage. Consider replacing the fuel injectors and filter as well. I had mine inspected and wound up flushing the brake fluid and replacing a control arm bushing. Finally once you’ve attended to that, follow proper warmup procedures and then let every other internet expert do the worrying.
