Looking to buy a used RAV4 or CRV - something that’s economical to drive, maintain and can house two adults and two infants. I was extremely interested in the Prius but the wife doesn’t like it. She’s open to a RAV4 or CRV, so I was wondering:
- are there RAV4 or CRV trims and years to stay away from?
- after what mileage does a RAV4 or CRV engine and/or transmission become unreliable where it’s a risky buy?
I understand it completely depends on how the previous owner(s) have driven and maintained the vehicle, but for example: Gen3 Prius, especially Trim 4 have an issue where after ~130k miles their EGR gums up and causes the engine to overheat and eventually die. A good test for it is to look at the EGR valve and the engine with an endoscope, so I’m wondering if there are known issues and tests for those for certain trims and years of that nature
