I think OG Top Gear was provocative enough to have actual petrolheads being stimulated while still being massively popular, that being said a cerebral James May type show with technical insight, asking the hard questions wouldn’t get the views a TG type variety show would.

True. Everyone forgets that, at least at first, it really was a car review show before all else.
