If a BMW dealer isn’t available to do the work in a reasonable timeframe, then can you have a qualified independent BMW shop do the work and have BMW pay the bill?

Every cooler is checked and prioritised accordingly, if a defect is noticed your vehicle must remain at the dealer till parts are availible.

I had the same issue, when I rang BMW they said that the fix they have now is a temp fix due to parts availability. So even if I take the car in now, I will need to take it in again in Q2 next year for a more perm fix. As others have said, keep an eye on the coolant level and if you see a drain, get an appointment. Good luck.

What model are you driving? I just put my F10 535i in the shop with a coolant and check engine light and they told me it was the thermostat.

It’s an obvious issue hence the message, don’t stop until they fix the affected parts

Better than recalling the engine ten years later……………. Or the cam bolts…… or the rod bearings.

My egr failed last October and the delear didnt repair until January. By this point my intake manifold had been damaged and they replaced that as well. Thankfully it was all covered under the recall warranty.

So the procedure is that they should have booked you in to inspect the egr. Not all cars are affected as some have a different egr but at the very least they should be checking to make sure it isn’t affected. Some cars have a small wait time where I am as some egr’s are on back order due to the sheer number of them we are replacing and they take about 4 weeks, However a lot of cars are getting done on the day they come in. Some also need the intake manifold and acoustics cover replaced at the same time. It takes a couple of minutes to check and I’m not sure why they are stating it doesn’t need to be checked or replaced as you can’t tell that unless you physically check the egr and it’s part number against the recall list. Some have the newer corrins egr already installed.

I had this issue, coolant leaked slowly, approximately 100ml a month. After 6 months of topping up the EML came on with no message on iDrive. BMW eventually agreed to resolve after I had a local specialist investigate. My previous dealer that I took it to was adamant that the recall did not affect my vehicle, even though I received a letter telling me it did which also explained the symptoms.

In the US, the N47 and N57 engines were recalled by-law due to fire risk by this exact failure of the EGR cooler. The Korens-made cooler was replaced with a new design made by Borg Warner. EGR valve is replaced too as well as the cover for the serpentine belts.

Anyone got a recall letter, as in paper form? They said they were going to contact me as soon as a replacement is available. It‘s been 6 months now. Actually the 2nd time they recalled the car because of that…

BMW Parts interpreter here. The parts supply for this EGR recall is so unbelievably baked at the moment that G05/6/7 and select G03/4 coolers have been on order now for approaching half a year. If you have an F series car the supply is better (At least in Australia) and you could see the recall done within a week. For everything else though, there unfortunately just isn’t any supply anywhere, and requesting an ETA from head office has been about as useful as eating a brick.

My car went on fire due to egr cooler - there are 100s of cases. Get it fixed asap. What model is your car?

    Mine was a 2014 525d.
