B760M Gaming X AX DDR4 and 13600K

Hi everyone,

I’m not sure where to find further information as I can’t seem to locate anything that describes my problem. I also posted this in r/gigabytegaming: https://www.reddit.com/r/gigabytegaming/comments/1801dmz/b760m_gaming_x_ax_ddr4_and_13600k/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

The situation:

I built a gaming PC earlier this year with the following components:

Intel i5 13600K

Arctic Freezer 240mm AIO

Gigabyte B760M Gaming X AX DDR4 (latest BIOS F16b, but also tested with original Firmware)

Palit GameRock Geforce RTX 4070 TI 12GB

Kingston Fury Beast DDR4-3600 CL18 2x16GB

Corsair 4000D with 4 additional Arctic 12 Fans

OS: Windows 11 23H2 latest updates

I can run Cinebench r23 for over 30 minutes without the CPU exceeding 90°C, and the VRM temperature never goes above 55°C.

Regarding BIOS settings:

I’ve experimented with different settings like “Spec Enhance,” “Max Turbo,” enabling adaptive Vcore, manually setting power limits to 4095W, but nothing has changed the results. When running Cinebench r23, the maximum power consumption I can get the CPU to reach is 176 watts. The resulting Cinebench score is around 22800 points, whereas I would expect an unrestricted 13600K to reach 24000 points.

Is my motherboard throttling my CPU? Am I missing any crucial settings in my BIOS? Actually, I’m planning to build another PC with the exact same board and a 14600K because, overall, I’m very satisfied with the build and its general gaming performance. It’s just bothering me that there seems to be something not quite right.

Cheers

I don’t know but I can offer another data point. My 13600k is undervolted and reaches around 68°C in CB23. It uses 135 watts. The resulting score is 22766. I have “Intel Undervolt Protection” turned off.

My guess would be either bad luck in the silicon lottery or your MB is holding back some performance. You might squeeze a little more performance with better RAM, but not likely to be much. But if you are satisfied with the gaming performance I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

Max TDP for 13600k is 181.

Mine 13700kf TDP is 253w but only max around 240w.

Try ovoid using Gigabyte Perfdrive node let it set default (Optimized).

Reset CMOS to flush bios setting. Set BIOS to default, set CPU Upgrade (Max Performance), Disable Enhanced Multi-Core Performance, Enable XMP & Enabled Resizable Bar.

Leave it TDP & V-Core in auto first and save bios setting. In Windows’ power plan, set to high performance. Then run cinebench.

Of everything works, go back to BIOS, set TDP P1: 125w & P2: 181w.

Never used a GB mobo but you can try to change the load line calibration switching between presets.

Also i had the opposite bad experience with with B760 and 13600kf. Abnormal power draw and voltage spikes. Voltage fine tuning didn’t solved the problem.

Only solution was to switch to z690/z790.

Try to monitor the p-core frequencies, if they goes under 5.1GHz during test the cpu is not getting enough Watts or Volts.

Probably ram and maybe b760 chipset. Still, i wouldnt go crazy over just about 1000 score. Also keep in mind, if you run cinebench on higher priority then you get a bit more score.
