Gimme that hardware ray tracing!
I bought my first Apple TV last year, sounds like I’ll be keeping it for a long time.
I still have an HD and a 4K. It looks like I need another AppleTV to use with a TV on the porch as well as extend/improve coverage for a HomeKit smart lock, so I can kill 2 birds with 1 stone in this case.
I still have a 4 HD. Use it every day.
Apple got it real quick fighting Roku you don’t force people to upgrade streaming boxes every year. Or years.
Is this article off or something? USB C on the remote and HDR10+ are already there.
Just please please please give it AV1 decode…
They have to put Apple A17 on it, since its only chip with hardware decoding av1.
That’d jack up the price more. Don’t think it’ll happen.
Yeah don’t see them putting such a new processor next year. Maybe in 2025. That would be the only reason worth upgrading if you got the new apple tv 4ks from the last few years.
A lot of us are still using 2015 era AppleTV’s, if your TV isn’t 4k, not much season to upgrade. 1st generation 4k’s are hitting 5 years old now.
I know some folks on the AV forums seem to upgrade TV’s every 2 years but most people are on more like a 10 years or until it dies cycle.
They need WiFi 6E to make me consider upgrading.
You would thing the next-gen will have 6E although I have mine hardwired.
Just saved you 2 minutes of your life.
Lower price, newer chip, a tad bit smaller, a nice bit lighter.
How much lighter and smaller does it need to be?
My 4k Apple TV is the worst piece of tech I’ve bought in the last 10 years. Would buy again.
Hope they still the Ethernet port
Audio passthrough and I am in. Why can’t Apple do this?
This isn’t very analytical stuff:
- Faster chip? That’s unheard of in a new model!
- Lower price? They did it last time, maybe they can do it again if they strip out a thing or two…
- Similar design? It’s been pretty much the same for the last 13 years, not a shocker.
That said, other than saving $20, there aren’t any listed reasons for a new one. Did I miss some actual “features?”
It’s a corporate fan fiction site.
By far the best streaming device out there. The only thing I want is a remote that makes a sound when I use Find My." The work around they cam out with is ok … still should just have find my
I think the biggest thing it’s missing is integrating the ability to watch broadcast TV, as well as Apple TV Netflix etc, people just want one solution. Here in the UK Sky have their stream service which has broadcast TV, Sky channels Netflix at call intergrated into the one device that just needs and internet connection.
I for one wouldn’t mind seeing Apple adding a secondary dedicated wireless chip, to be used with HomePods (if they’re in home theatre mode), instead of relying on the user’s WiFi. If anyone, Apple has the means to do so, and it would reduce the issues many are having with e.g. channel hopping.
Beyond that, it would be interesting if Apple also introduced a more gaming focused TV box. tvOS is already an essentially somewhat stripped down iOS, so putting the appropriate hardware under it could make it into a good entry option for even more taxing games. Imagine an M3 Pro powered beast with 16GB RAM, M.2 expandable storage for larger games, and unlike Macs, they’d have absolute control over the market. Apple’s hardware already goes head to head with top of the mid-range dedicated gaming hardware, at fraction of the power consumption, so once they get serious about gaming, I could see such a device clawing some of the market share away from Sony and Microsoft.
It needs to be able to play games like RE4 remake
I really only want AV1 support and I’m set. It’s the only reason I would go to new hardware from my current 4K.
AV1 hopefully 🤞
They dropped the ball on that with the current model. They should’ve included that considering Amazon has it in their current gen units.
Yeah same thinking
Still gonna have wonky controllers that disconnect or what?
I use my 2022 4K ATV everyday and there’s not a lot more I want/need it do really.
Audio pass-through for Plex would be nice.
Holy crap yes please, plus I wouldn’t mind a 256gb model. My kids love playing Arcade games but I have a 64Gb model and I can only have a few games on at a time.
I just got mine two weeks ago and absolutely love it. I think the only thing lacking is AV1 codec support.
I started using Infuse to stream my plex library
If one, lets say, accessed someone else’s Plex library, would this app work?

Only thing I really wish it had, that it never will, is a USB port to plug in a hard drive.
It has no business on an apple device, go buy a Shield if you want this kind of equipment.
No business being on an apple device? Who the hell made my iPad, iPhone, and MacBook then cause those all have them. Dick.
This is the only thing stoping me from buying one
